To The Equator

This was for a newspaper, I do for a writing class. It's very radnom.

This is a story about a child named Humphrey. Humphrey lives in a mountain cave, in the middle of Antarctica. His best friends are a penguin and a fish; Zuler and Max.

Humphrey wants to move to the equator, but has no way of getting there. Zuler is all for the idea and suggests they build a raft of frozen ice to get there. Max disagrees.

"It will melt before we are halfway there." He points out.

"I see what you mean," Humphrey says "Sorry Zuler. Frozen ice raft is out."

Zuler is very disappointed.

"I don't see the fish coming up with anything." He mutters.

"I have it!" Max shouts. "We build the raft out of eels!"

"YES!!! You're right! It must be done out of eels. There is no other way to do it. We will start immediately."

With those words they begin to build the raft. It does not take long. About twenty minutes, I should say.

"We will sail on the morning tide!" Humphrey declares. It is answered with a hearty

"Aye! So we shall!"

The first light of day shows, but our friends are nowhere to be seen. Ah, there they are. Sailing into the rising sun. Such a pretty sight. Wait! What is this?! There is a new member in their band. It is a goose. A goose? Yes, it is. It is a goose. What's that? Ah, the goose's name is Ben. He is their guide to the equator. He is a "Goose Guide".

They are there. The equator! Oh happy day!

"LAND!!!!!" Is the general outcry. They leap off the raft, and kiss the (rather moist) ground. What is that sound? It's rain! They have never heard or seen rain. They rejoice in their triumph; leaping about in the moist air.

Zuler is beginning to look rather sick.

"Zuler! I order you: rejoice!." Humphrey orders.

"I feel rather queer. I am afraid this weather does not agree with me."

"Yes it does penguin! Don't be ridiculous!"

"Um...." Zuler! He fell. Is he alive? Will he be revived? Alas no. He is gone forever. Why don't you put the penguin named Zuler on the raft? Send him back to his land.

"Why don't we put Zuler the Penguin on the raft? Send him back to his land." Says Humphrey.

Humphrey puts the dear beloved Zuler on the raft. Sniffs, drops a tear, says a farewell, and walks away. The goose guide and Max the fish do the same.

In the jungle they find what appears to be a family of gnomes, who welcome Max, Ben, and Humphrey with open arms (literally). The gnomes invite the the three strangers to stay for dinner. Our friends accept the invitation.

Max the Fish, Ben the Goose, and Humphrey the Child, soon discover that dinner is to be a welcoming party for the three of them. Strangers are rare in this particular jungle and a party is held every time someone passes through.

At this party, our friends met eight pirates, two bears, five porcupines, twenty-three gorillas, seven maidens, and one hundred three ants. They made friends with everyone, and survived all one hundred three flesh eating ants.

About 11:00PM a swarm of termites came and captured one of the seven fair maidens.

"Halt, you heartless swine!" Shouted Humphrey.

"Don't be ridiculous." The lead termite replied.

This remark infuriated Humphrey. "I will not listen to those words peaceably!." He shouted and ran after the termites captors.

Upon finding the termite camp, he rested. He ran all the way, and was slightly tired. He inhaled one big breath, and ran into the termite camp shouting,

"You will unhand that maiden. You foul beasts. Actually small bark eating flies!"

Rescue the fair maiden he did. And when he became of age they were married under a hollow log. Everyone was exceedingly happy, except Max he was beginning to feel short of breath. But he jumped into a pond and felt perfectly well again. Thus, making the day just what it should be.

They all lived happily ever after in the jungle on the equator. THE END

I like Zuler. Where did you get the name? It's so random. Good story (although when I read the name Humphrey, I thought of Humphrey Bogart, and that's not a pretty thing to have in one's head).

Yes of course it rains. It's just more like a mist. Haven't you ever watched man vs wild? It really looks quite annoying. Then again he wasn't actually on the equator. He was just really close to it.
