1.
The girl sat on the edge of the balcony, looking over the city below. It was busy and bustling as normal but she always liked to watch it from a distance. She was a fair, beautiful young woman, seventeen or less, with long, flowing brown hair, who was nothing like any other girl in all the land. Her father always said to her that she was special though no one thought she was. Every girl except her best friend thought she was a riot.
The thing about her that no one liked was that she did boyish things. Instead of learning how to take care of a family someday, she would escape into the woods and hunt with her bow and fight with the other boys in town. The women of the village always gawked at her and gossiped about what a boy she was. But she never cared. She dreamed that someday she would get away from the town and go off on her own adventure. Then she would be truly free.
The girl’s name was Areon.
It wasn’t until her father had called her that she had began thinking about the day she would get away. She had tried to long ago, but her father wasn’t ready for his only daughter to leave. Areon looked up to see the eagle soaring above. Someday, she said. Someday, I’ll be free.
“Areon! Areon!”
Areon shook her head and looked to the tall, handsome man behind her. He was not very old, only 83, old enough to have seen Areon’s great grandfather. He was build, his arms big like pillars but yet he was a kind and gentle man, and he loved his family. Even if Areon had seen him minutes before, she was always glad to see her loving father.
“Hello, Dad,” she said, greeting him with a tender kiss.
The tall, kind man smiled as he looked at his beautiful daughter. “Hello, Areon, what are you doing here?”
“Just………thinking.” There suddenly was an awkward silence. Areon did not want to admit what she was thinking. But her Dad’s curious blue eyes brought the words out of her.
“I was only thinking, Dad,” Areon replied. “of the day I might leave……”
Her father’s loving smile turned into a hurt frown. Areon knew that he never liked hearing about her leaving someday.
“I know that one day you must leave,” her father painfully continued. “When you are married……….but I think you’re too young to leave by yourself like you tried to do two years ago."
"it's not because I don't like my life here," Areon explained. "It's because....." her voice trailed off.
Her father heavily sighed but suddenly smiled brightly. "You remind me of myself when I was young. I was independent, and some people didn't like me that much. But I remember how wonderful my life and how young I was. So I decided to go back on my own instead staying where I was and being brought back by searchers. My point is that I don't want my only daughter to leave me so fast. I just want you to stay longer. Remember the promise.”
Areon looked down to her feet and sighed. She had remembered promising her father long ago that she would never leave like that again. Even thinking about it now made Areon feel like she was breaking her promise.
“I’m sorry, Father. I’ll keep my promise.”
