A beautiful living room.

An Essay By KatieMarie // 4/24/2009

Looking at the outside of the house, it just looks like another commonplace abode. But, after stepping inside the door and into the living room, a treasure is found. The first thing noticed is the rustic brick fireplace directly across the room from the door. A pile of black ashes is piled up inside the bronze grates from burnt newspapers and old magazines from when roasting marshmallows on special occasions. Above the fireplace is a wooden mantle. Sitting upon it are a variety of cards from the most recent holiday or birthday, a couple of statues of an assortment of different saints, different electronics and their needed chargers, and pictures of much loved family members. To the right of the fireplace sits a big chair covered with pillows. On the wall behind the chair are several decorative plates with paintings from the mother’s home country, Honduras. A few of the paintings include children running and playing and people playing music. Diagonally across the room is a floral print sofa, home to many pillows and handmade shawls and blankets. Above the sofa are many large family photographs. Some of them include each child at their first communion, and a picture of all the girls together in traditional Honduras garb. There are also photos of the family throughout the years, showing how each child has matured and how the family has grown. Below the sofa are two large, exquisitely decorated swords. The swords are owned by the two eldest daughters and used for martial arts. To the right of the sofa is the highlight of the room: an extraordinary four foot tall

statue of Our Lady of Fatima. On the table that holds Our Lady are several rosaries and two spotlights shining into the face of Our Mother. With the spotlight, you can see that her face is filled with pity, hope, sorrow, and yet, joy as well. To the left of the statue is a bookcase filled with photo albums and random religious books. On top of the bookcase are statues of many different saints, and pottery and art projects by the children. Right in the middle of the room lays a big, bronze colored, snoring dog. The dog, Rocky, considers the comfortable carpet to be his bed. After seeing this room, there is no denying that it is the epitome of family love and togetherness.
