Chapter One: Life or Death

Sunlight streamed down through the leaves and branches of the oldest tree in Du Weldenvarden illuminating the twelve year old elven girl lying beneath it. She had raven hair, emerald eyes that seemed to see right through you, and alabaster pale skin. Her high fine eyebrows met together as for the millionth time she attempted to use magic. She probed her mind attempting to find the barrier her mother said was in the mind of all magicians and hoping she could maybe breach it; she battered at the resistance she found in her mind, but it held fast before all her efforts. Growling, she threw herself against it, but all she succeeded in doing was bruising herself. During this, she had risen to her feet, but she flopped down onto the grass again. She folded her arms and lay her chin on them. “Why can’t I use magic?” she fretted. “My mother is one of the most powerful magic users in Ellesmera! My father was very powerful as well.” She sighed and rolled over. A hard cruel voice drifted out of the trees. At the sound, birds ceased their singing, and even the very air seemed hushed. “So, princess,” the voice sneered “We meet again. You evaded me last time, but THIS time, there will be no escape.” “What are you willing to bet?” challenged Arya, a slight smile playing at her lips, and darted into the depths of the forest, her black braid whipping behind her like electricity.
Arya ran as fast as she could, yet the being behind her seemed to be catching up. Somehow she managed to summon a mediocre more of strength and ran so fast it seemed she should loft off the earth and fly. Finally, Arya saw what she had been so desperately trying to reach. A sheer cliff, descending 100 feet into a small lake. Arya reached the edge, hesitated for one split second, then launched herself off, free-falling. Shrieking with pure delight, her undulating voice spun out over the water, collecting in the corners of the valley, and echoing madly. Twenty feet above the surface, she curled in to a perfect swan dive. Her arrow-straight body sliced through the crystal clear water like a knife. Arya swam upwards and broke the surface, flinging her hands up, and gasping with shock at the icy cold water. Above her she could see her pursuer, also leaping off the cliff in to the lake, also bending into a swan dive. Sunlight glinted off his body, and the low-hanging clouds threw a halo around him. His rapier-thin form pierced the water with hardly a ripple. As he sliced through the water toward her, at near supernatural speeds, Arya turned, and began swimming as fast as she could, angling for an island in the exact center of the lake. Upon reaching the island, she pulled herself ashore, and with amazing poise surveyed her surroundings. Hearing a slight noise behind her, she whipped around, her black braid snapping like a whip. A slight, thin form exploded from the water like a leaping dolphin, and landed scarcely ten feet in front of her. Arya clutched her sword handle. “Stay back or I’ll, I’ll,” Kill me? How sweet.” He drew his sword and attacked so fast that she barely had time to draw her own to block his blows. Arya swung, blocked, slashed and parried with the combined ease and grace of both natural elven abilities, and the knowledge of one who has been learning sword-play for as long as they could remember. However, despite her best efforts, she found herself being backed up slowly toward and ancient oak tree. Arya glanced backwards, estimated a shrinking distance from her to the tree, blocked one last blow, then turned and ran toward the tree. She ran three steps up the tree, pushed off, and soared in a backflip over her attacker. She landed behind him so lightly, it was no more earth-shaking that if she was feather that floated down to earth and landed. “Gotcha” she smiled. She then drew her own sword and attacked so fast he was momentarily stunned. Then, beginning to recover, he in turn found himself being backed up toward the tree. Their sinuous forms wound together like wisps of smoke; their blades flashing through the air almost to fast for the human eye to see. Her opponent lunged forward, sword in hand. Arya nimbly leaped out of the way, then, using his own momentum against him she forced him backwards toward the lake. On the third step back, he had reached the edge. The bank crumbled under his weight-slight as it was, sending him flying, arms waving, into the depths of the lake. Arya’s laugh died in her throat as she saw a red cloud the water, and noted his failure to surface. Her eyes grew wide with freight. “No, Faolin!” she screamed, Then abandoning her sword on the bank, she dove in after him. Arya opened her eyes wide in the crystal clear water, desperately hoping for a glimpse of Faolin. She glanced downwards. Below her, Faolin was sinking fast. Arya, ignoring her burning lungs, swam down after him. She seized his limp hand and streaked for the surface. Arya exploded to the surface, sucking the air into her tortured lungs gratefully. She sliced through the water with short, quick strokes, towing Faolin after her. She heaved him up onto the island, and clambered out after him. She bit her lip so hard it bled, as she saw the gaping wound in Faolin’s head. Arya quickly ripped a piece of cloth off her tunic, and pressed it onto the wound, hard. “Be healed” she said under her breath, not actually expecting it to work. It didn’t. Arya remained motionless by his side, holding the bandage down firmly. With each passing moment that the bleeding did not stop, she knew his chances of survival grew slimmer. A cloud passed in front of the sun, the unexpected chill made her shiver. Arya grew desperate. “I can’t let you die!” she screamed. She ripped the bandage off and laid her hand directly on the wound. She could feel the blood oozing out between her fingers with each faint beat of his heart. “Be healed!” Arya gasped as a river of light flooded her mind. “Be healed” she repeated softly; A vast amount of energy flooded out of her, and her palm tingled uncontrollably. She felt a slight movement under her palm as the skin flowed together seamlessly. Arya lifted her shaking bloodstained palm. His wound was healed. “I did it.” She said; her eyes wide. “I did it. I DID IT!” Her bent down and wrapped her arms around Faolin’s prostrate form. “Faolin” she murmured gently into his ear. “Wake up.”

I am quite sure Arya was in love with Faolin.

Sarah Michal | Sat, 12/29/2007 - 4:35pm

Yeah, so am I.
did'ja like the story???
It's just the beginning,
I have several more chapters written

Anna | Sat, 12/29/2007 - 5:33pm

Yeah, I like it.

Wasn't it the Inheritance Trilogy?

Sarah Michal | Sat, 12/29/2007 - 7:45pm

yeah, but CP decided to make it four books instead of three.

ya
Tamerah | Sun, 12/30/2007 - 2:13pm

hes so crazy
the next book isn't coming out till september
its torcher

but i don't remember a Faolin. . that is, i thought the name sounded familiar, but i'm not sure, did you just make him up or is he in the books, or at least mentioned?

I haven't read them in a while because i'm afriad if i read them again i'll get all interested and not be able to wait for the next book to come out.

Anna | Sun, 12/30/2007 - 4:40pm

Faolin was one of the messengers in the beginning of book 1; Glenwing and Faolin, both died... yeah, there are several hints dropped that he and Arya were in love: He made a flower for her, she refused to talk about him to Eragon, a picture of an unknown elf in her room...

Wow
Tamerah | Sun, 12/30/2007 - 5:56pm

How many times have you read those books?
Although I knew the name sounded familiar I had no idea why.
I hardly remember the first book, its been so long, I remember Eldest slightly better. I'm really worried about what the author is going to do in the third and fourth book. I have a baaaaad feeling something is going to happen to Murtagh and that would not make me very happy.

Sarah Michal | Sun, 12/30/2007 - 8:27pm

I am a total Eragon/Eldest freak
I am a global mod on a fan site,
I sleep w/ the books hidden under my
mattress, yeah.
I have practically the entire
books memorized.

Yeah, I think something bad will happen to murt, and
that makes me sad. :(

:(
Tamerah | Sun, 12/30/2007 - 10:53pm

i know, he was my favorite. . .
i think he is going to die
that is my personal oppinion

i'm more of a lord of the rings freak
ask me any question about those books
and i bet i could answer it correctly

:]

Anna | Mon, 12/31/2007 - 11:07am

I only read them once... I just paid alot of attention...
Yeah, I like Murtagh like alot... he's gotta turn good and fall in love!!!!!!! Sorry I'm a total romance nut- expect it from me, in stories, in emails, in posts, on blogs, in comments....

Anna | Mon, 12/31/2007 - 11:09am

There was something I wanted to know about lotr but now I cna't remember...

March 1st is Aragorn's birthday!!!!!! Yay!!!!! He's like my all-time favorite, HUGE crush on him, not to mention he's really hot in the movies... TWO MONTHS!!!!!!!!!!

Heather | Mon, 12/31/2007 - 4:01pm

So CP decided to make them four? Wow. I didn't know that. This was pretty good fanfic, Sarah. :) I've read both books, and liked them, though I go with Tamerah, I'm more of a LOTR fan. I'm glad other people really like Murtagh. My brother read Eldest before I did, and he told me I'd flip when I found out what happened to Murtagh. Does anyone here like the movie, or hate it?

. .
Tamerah | Mon, 12/31/2007 - 4:39pm

I never saw the movie but i saw clips of it on youtube and from what is saw they totaly screwed it up. I have vowed never to watch it.

. .
Tamerah | Mon, 12/31/2007 - 4:41pm

i think its more likely that Murtagh dies, because that bad guy knows his secret name thingy now so he can make him do whatever he wants, so even if he is still good the bad guy will make him do bad things, so he will probably sacrafice himself to save Eragon and in the process he'll die. Thats my guess

. .
Tamerah | Mon, 12/31/2007 - 4:43pm

Well if you remember you know who to ask :D
And personally Legolas is my favorite, in both the movies and the books, but thats probably because he is an elf and i like elves the best :D

Anna | Mon, 12/31/2007 - 5:12pm

Yeah, I know, but everyone loves Murtagh...

Anna | Mon, 12/31/2007 - 5:12pm

Elves ARE the best, but Aragorn is bestER.

Sarah Michal | Mon, 12/31/2007 - 6:16pm

I HATED the movie!

Sarah Michal | Mon, 12/31/2007 - 7:33pm

For starters,
the "bad guy's" name is Galbatorix.
And, yes, he knows Murtagh's true name.
sadly,
I think that he will die.......
sadness

Heather | Mon, 12/31/2007 - 7:52pm

You weren't missing much. It was so bad that if they ever decide to make a movie of Eldest, they'll have to do Eragon all over again. They changed how Brom died, Arya's hair color is red, the Ra'zac die...yeah. I watch it but I treat it as something totally different from the book. My brother hated it.

Whatever you are, be a good one-Abe Lincoln

Heather | Mon, 12/31/2007 - 7:55pm

I don't like Legolas because his hair is too long. Strange but true

Megan | Mon, 12/31/2007 - 8:13pm

Good fan-fic, Sarah!

Don't even get me started on the Eragon movie. I HATED it. I get mad just thinking about it. I was furious after I watched it. They totaly messed it up.

. .
Tamerah | Mon, 12/31/2007 - 8:45pm

I HATE it when they change hair color! Oh my gosh you have no idea, i rant about it all the time. I knew the movie was terrible from the moment i saw the trailer. I can't believe Christopher Pailoini let them ruin it.

. .
Tamerah | Mon, 12/31/2007 - 8:47pm

i knew his name i just didn't know how to spell it.
and if i dies i will cry for an eternity
but i am already prepaired

psh
Tamerah | Mon, 12/31/2007 - 8:48pm

Elves are supposed to have long hair
Aragorn has long hair too
Not as long as Legolas' but still
Anyhew
:]

Tamerah | Mon, 12/31/2007 - 8:49pm

I'm not sure where Aragorn fits into my favorites
it goes
Legolas
Pippin
Gimli
Aragorn??

i don't know
i DO know that Frodo is my LEAST favorite

;-)
Emily-Smileygirl | Tue, 01/01/2008 - 8:08am

I really like Legolas too and Frodo! Do you really like legolas? JK.
:-D

Emily-Smileygirl | Tue, 01/01/2008 - 8:09am

Say what?

Emily-Smileygirl | Tue, 01/01/2008 - 8:11am

Wow. You're brave enough to confess your crush on the web?
Well I'll tell you one thing. Aragon MIGHT be good looking, but when it comes to good looks in LOTR, LEGOLAS is the man!

Emily-Smileygirl | Tue, 01/01/2008 - 8:14am

Yep. My brother likes Eragon and he told me the CP couldn't fit the finish to everything plot line in one book.

Anna | Tue, 01/01/2008 - 10:26am

I LOVE Pip, he's adorable...

I personnally think Sam should've been given the Ring, he woulda handled it better.

Anna | Tue, 01/01/2008 - 10:27am

What, you bought a forever's supply of tissues?

Anna | Tue, 01/01/2008 - 10:28am

What's brave about confessing a crush on the web? Especially considering it's not even a real person...

Anna | Tue, 01/01/2008 - 10:31am

But Aragorn's hair color is PERFECT!!!!! Greasy, but perfect!!!!!!
Sorry, I'm in LotR mode.

I liked the movie until I read the books.

Anyone notice the movie was pretty violent for PG?

Emily-Smileygirl | Tue, 01/01/2008 - 11:16am

Well.... I thought it was brave. But

ha
Tamerah | Tue, 01/01/2008 - 8:18pm

HA

Tamerah | Tue, 01/01/2008 - 8:20pm

You mean the elf

Sarah Michal | Wed, 01/02/2008 - 12:31am

wellllllllllllll
I don't really know. If I had to guess, I'd say 10 or 11 time through, each.

Sarah Michal | Wed, 01/02/2008 - 12:35am

If murt dies, I will sniff
a few times, than go on with my life
happily

duh
Tamerah | Wed, 01/02/2008 - 1:43am

i don't actually go on crying about books all the time, they are, afterall, books!

Emily-Smileygirl | Wed, 01/02/2008 - 9:20am

Oh yeah, thank you.

Anna | Wed, 01/02/2008 - 11:16am

TAKE THAT BACK
OR FEAR MY WRATHFUL COMMENTS

Anna | Wed, 01/02/2008 - 11:17am

I'll do it again! I'm also in love with Char from the BOOK (not movie, it stinx) Ella Enchanted!!!!!!!

Emily-Smileygirl | Wed, 01/02/2008 - 1:21pm

True, actually. i did have a crush on legolas. But I still think I do have the crush. He is really handsome! The part that would be brave would be if the crush was really real.

. .
Tamerah | Wed, 01/02/2008 - 3:58pm

What, they are books. I am reading this really depressing book right now called Wuthering Heights, and i have to heep telling myself it is just a book.

Megan | Wed, 01/02/2008 - 4:48pm

I've read books like that.

Sarah Michal | Wed, 01/02/2008 - 7:07pm

so have i.
And, i don't like
them that much, either.

I wrote more Arya fic, should I post it?

Megan | Wed, 01/02/2008 - 8:08pm

Nick | Thu, 01/03/2008 - 9:44am

Nick | Thu, 01/03/2008 - 9:46am

Long Live The lords and masters of the Sith !
no way! i have seen much more grafic for pg.
you look up Omega man. its a horibble movie, really truly horrible, but youd be surprised for pg.

. .
Tamerah | Thu, 01/03/2008 - 3:36pm

Isn't that the movie about the guy who is like the last person on the earth or something? Or is that a different movie?

Emily-Smileygirl | Thu, 01/03/2008 - 7:44pm

The last man on earth is "I am Legend" with Will Smith.

. .
Tamerah | Thu, 01/03/2008 - 8:44pm

I know that, i went and saw that movie already, but it wasn't the first of that one, it wa a remake of an old movie that i THINK was called The Omega Man, i'm not sure now though

Anna | Fri, 01/04/2008 - 2:42pm

I don't watch very many violent movies. I wasn't allowed to see anything PG-13 until I was 11 and that's only been about a year and a half.

Some movies that are violent PG's came out beore PG-13 came out, but Eragon was fairly recent.

JarJarTheSith | Sat, 01/05/2008 - 3:28pm

Moofins! *hides lightsaber* "I didn't do anything here......"

"Miseh a evil Sith Lord with two black Lightsabers!"

Star Wars Forever!

Anna | Sat, 01/05/2008 - 8:12pm

It very rarely comes to actual CRYING with me, but books... are... not.... "just.... books". They are so real! You have no idea.
I have visited many many books and they are all very real, very scary, some of them. It hurts to talk to the characters and really know what they're feeling.

Sorry if this sounds weird. Don't ask; I'm not going to explain.
I am not talking about getting lost in a good book.

Nick | Sat, 01/05/2008 - 8:16pm

same here
Long Live The lords and masters of the Sith !

yes
Nick | Sat, 01/05/2008 - 8:17pm

Nick | Sat, 01/05/2008 - 8:29pm

Long Live The lords and masters of the Sith !

Tamerah | Sat, 01/05/2008 - 10:28pm

I love Will Smith!
My sister bought me the first season of the Fresh Prince for christmas!

Emily-Smileygirl | Sun, 01/06/2008 - 2:29pm

Huh?

Anna | Mon, 01/07/2008 - 1:47pm

You don't have to LIKE them, they just ARE.

Anna | Mon, 01/07/2008 - 1:48pm

Exactly! I'm in love with Aragorn, but not Viggo Mortensen!

Emily-Smileygirl | Mon, 01/07/2008 - 6:20pm

Yeah! It is true. i do like Will turner and Legolas but not orlando bloom. And I maybe like a real person where it would be brave to say that onlibe. But, um, Nick, you only meant fan right? No offense, not thinking anything. Or were you just using that as example?

Emily-Smileygirl | Mon, 01/07/2008 - 6:21pm

Wait, there's a book?
