Laughter is the best medicine. . .

Do you realize how often we speak in phrases that don't actually make sense? There are so many phrases rolling around out there, do we actually know what they mean? Lets start from the beginning, first things first.
Oh I See
Now this one isn't actually a common phrase, but we do use it constantly. I caught myself saying it just the other day when i was talking to a friend. And then i got to thinking. Why do we say "Oh I see."? Couldn't we actually see all along? Shouldn't it be more like "Oh I understand, whereas i didn't before, but i do now, all the while i could see." Just rolls right off the tongue doesn't it?
Have Your Cake and Eat it too
This saying fits a lot of situations, it can basically be used when someone wants an outcome, but doesn't want to work for it. Now where this one gets a little muddled is the whole cake thing. Of course if someone has cake they are going to want to eat it! They aren't just going to leave it there on the counter. I suppose they could pass it off as a very elaborate paperweight but people will start to get a little suspicious of its authenticity when said paperweight begins to smell.
The Whole Enchilada
I'm beginning to realize how many phrases we have out there that involve food. This one, put plainly, basically means, the whole thing. Now when i describe this one i seem to want to use other like saying, such as, "The Whole Shebang," or, "The Whole Kitten Caboodle." My question is, why Enchilada? What does Shebang even mean, and the Whole Kitten Caboodle? Come on people, is that the best you can come up with?
An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away
Can you imagine how many people there are out there who, being told this, actually ate an apple a day for their whole lives? Bet they were surprised every time they got sick. This saying is not only misleading, but can you imagine if the person didn't even like apples? They would be enduring the torture of eating a fruit day after day that they didn't even like, and in the end, it didn't actually work!
Better Late Than Never
Now i get why people say this. Basically, when, say it is someone's birthday, and a friend forgets and gives them their gift late, they say "Better Late Than Never." to cover their mistake. And the friend will nod and smile and be like "That is so true," But is it really? Say this friend who gave the late gift, gave it a couple of years late. In a couple of years so many things can change, what if this person was in a bad car accident and had their legs amputated and the gift was a pair of pants. Then the late-gift-giver finally gets around to giving their friend the present and says "Hey, Better Late Than Never!" Do you want to rethink that?
Crime Doesn't Pay
Hello! Ever heard of a bank robber?
Fight Fire With Fire
This is a very dangerous saying, especially if taken literally. Say your house is burning down, and you've called the fire department, but you think that you should do some work before they get there so they don't have as much to do. So you go about lighting all the curtains and the bed spreads in an attempt to keep your house from burning to the ground. The thing is, in most situations, when you fight fire with fire, all you get is a bigger fire.
Speak When You're Spoken To
Can you imagine if everyone in the world followed this one? No one would ever talk. On the plus side everyone would be good at sign language. But still, it makes you rethink the saying "Silence Is Golden."
Don't Toot Your Own Horn
OK so this one basically means if you do something good, don't brag about it. But again i have that oh so common question, why? If you have a horn, wouldn't you want to play it? But when i ask why, i ask, why would you say it like that? Why not think of something more creative, for instance, Don't milk your own goat. I actually made that one up myself! Now you see if we made up all of our own sayings, sure they still wouldn't make much sense, but at least when you say them, you can say them proudly, knowing that no one else out there is saying it like that. Oh, the power!
All's Well That Ends Well
But will this blog end well? I wonder. . .
If it doesn't, keep an eye open for my next blog and a post like this one which will likely be titled "First Things First Part Two" Or something like that, cuz believe me, i've got a million more of these things floating around in my head! You can debate on whether that is a good thing.
I love sayings that roll around, so this was pretty funny for me! But I have to say that I understand where the 'fight fire with fire' comes from. Ever helped burn a field of sedge brush? Sometimes when you're burning pasture, the fire gets out of control, so people start little, controlled fires called backfires that burn a strip of ground. When the out of control fire reaches that burned strip of ground, it doesn't have anything to feed on! I know that's more the literal meaning of this phrase than anything...and sorry if I'm annoying you. :)
Thea
Dude I'm so proud to call you my sister...your going to be a famous writer someday, and be on Oprah's book list. You've got such great biting wit. Great job on this one.
I like this a lot.
It makes you think about what you say... and puts it in a humorous light.
