--Abortion, Christianity, and William Wilberforce--

You’re probably thinking…”What in the world do all these random things have in common? Oh, okay, well I can see the connection with abortion and Christianity. Okay, and the mess we’re in, obviously. But what about that random guy Wilberforce? Don’t I remember that name from my 10th grade history class?”

Yes, yes! You do! Please allow me to introduce you to one of my personal favorites from the hall of time and history, Mr. William Wilberforce.

I’ll not ramble too much about this awesome man of God—I have simply introduced him today to borrow one of his greatest quotes:

“Having heard all of this you may choose to look the other way, but you can never again say that you did not know.” ~ William Wilberforce—in a speech before Parliament; May 12th, 1789.

Speaking boldly on this momentous day in history against the institution of slavery in Great Britain, Wilberforce presented the members of Parliament with the evils of the slave trade. He confronted the politicians with its cruel reality that they so often overlooked, ignored, and glossed over—all to retain the votes of the slave-owning class.

Then—he presented them with a fork in the road with the statement above. They could ignore the truth and look stubbornly the other way, even with the knowledge that they were given; or, they could stand up, accept the truth, and work tirelessly to put an end to the trade.

Yawwwwwn. “Sarah, when you gonna stop rambling about history? We all know you’re a nerd, great. Just talk about something that relates to real life, please?” Oh, I’m getting there, believe me. What does all this sound like to you? Random historical trivia? Remember that history repeats herself…

Just like the millions of souls that were sold into slavery in the 1700’s, tens of millions of lives have been snuffed out through the evil that has grasped our nation—abortion. Recently, several organizations have revealed the heartbreaking and sickening truth to the American people—the horrors that the fifty-six million children have had to endure while the abortion industry ends their short and beautiful lives.

It is an evil that we cannot ignore.

American Christians—we are Parliament! The cry of William Wilberforce echoes down eerily through time and enters our ears. We have heard—we have seen; we cannot stand before the judgement seat of Christ and say we did not know. What are we going to do about it?

I don’t believe in legislating morality. It never has worked, and it never will. The hearts and the minds of the people of America need revival. I understand that the world is going to increase in wickedness until our Lord returns, but that does not mean that we can sit back comfortably and watch children die in the meantime. The pro-life movement is alive and well! We need counselors, office workers, children’s clothing, truck drivers, furniture movers, and janitors. The needs are endless—but material things are not what we need most. We desperately need the prayers of God’s people. Commit to pray every day for wisdom for the counselors in your area, courage to do the right thing for the young girls and women being pressured to get an abortion, and strength for all the workers in so many capacities that make saving lives possible. Pray for your local Planned Parenthood or abortion clinic, that God would open the doctors and nurses’ eyes to see the realities of abortion. And pray that God would send more laborers into His field, right here in our own backyards.
