In the darkness there is a creature that hides behind every shadow.
In the hall where there should be company and fellowship, a single man sits alone.
And the silence weighs down on him with ever increasing tension.
The creature slowly comes out of the shadow, bringing with it a dread that cannot be escaped.
You sit and wait for it to come, as it has come before.
You think you can fight it off, but its strength is too much for any man.
And with a sudden horror you realize it is your old foe, whose presence fills you with hopelessness.
In a desperate effort to fight it off you build your fires ever higher and light more lights than before.
But every light serves to show the emptiness of the hall, and despair comes ever closer.
But then, a sound that can make you heart jump: A door is opening somewhere. Someone else is coming.
The creature flees at their approach.
Suddenly the night is wonderful, for you have someone else to share the darkness with you.
And through the long hours of the night, the creature will hide away in its shadows, until the dawn comes and banishes it, for you have someone to share the dawn with.
This is a bit I wrote in late spring of last year when I couldn't sleep. Tell me I'm not the only one who receives inspiration in the middle of the night.
