Dawn has not yet come.
When He is not here, how can there be sun?
The earth shook yet again – what was causing this madness?
It struck terror in their hearts, combined with pre-existing sadness.
The women reached the tomb; the stone was rolled away.
It had been sealed – this was no child’s play.
And sitting on the stone, with appearance like lightning
Clothing white as snow, his appearance was frightening.
The angel spoke, said “do not fear,
The one you seek, He is not here.
Why do you seek the living among the dead?
The Crucified is risen, just as He said.”
And then he said to tell the others
Matthew, Peter, and the brothers.
“Remember He told you what be,
Now look where He was – do you not see?”
Seized with trembling, they fled.
They were troubled - Jesus had been dead!
Mary told Peter and John,
“They have taken the Lord, his body is gone!”
So Peter and the one whom Jesus loved went out
The other disciple ran ahead on their route,
But at the tomb he stopped and waited –
Forgetting his words, their joy was belated.
He saw the linen cloths, but did not go in,
Peter was first to enter within.
The face cloth was folded in a place of its own,
It was clear from the grave that Jesus had flown.
Then the other entered and saw it firsthand,
He believed, but did not yet understand.
Then Mary stood weeping outside the grave,
They had taken the Lord who was going to save.
“Woman, why are you weeping?
Whom are you seeking?”
She begged to know where He was laid
She sought the Lord that she obeyed.
Then when He said her name, she knew.
This Gardener was no ordinary Jew.
He told her not to cling to Him,
But, rise, tell the others He was living again!
