On Writing: Medium and Style

I rarely - if ever - construct a poem at a computer. For whatever reason, when I decide I want to sit down and write a poem, I always look around for a pencil and my notebook. Even if I've been sitting at my computer for a while, as soon as I want to work on a poem, I almost instinctively leave it for a piece of paper.

The Tree

Oh, look at that tree,
Much, much taller than me,
Reaching way up for the sky.

I looked at that tree,
So much taller than me,
Thinking ‘twas higher than high.

As I looked at that tree,
I wished dreamily
That up near the clouds I could fly.

Like a bird in that tree,
So much higher than me,
Seated in his nest, warm and dry.

While I walked by that tree,
I stumbled dazedly,
Wiping a tear from my eye.

Sitting down by that tree,
I realized suddenly,
Better to accept, than ask “why?”

Creating Memories

The evening was beautiful and cool. I felt very much in need of a pleasant, peaceful walk, having just been working hard in the garden weeding and picking beans and cucumbers. So I decided to go to the field and back, and maybe check for berries while I was there.

Loving Memories

Through the haze of something long un-thought of
it comes,
flowing from a dusty memory
to something clear
and my heart aches with the bittersweet drifts of it,
as it slowly takes over

It becomes so vivid,
that it is hard to imagine it gone
it seems to fill me
and at the same time
take part of me away
The memory of a day

Days past,
some long ago
others more close
All filled with the warm feeling
of a generous heart
and a gift of great love

A sharp light soaks through your opening eyes
the sounds are loud and curious from the great silence
your cries pierce the air
ringing out in a place
you do not know

Welcome to the world

Your fingers reach, stretching
trying to find something, someone
to hold onto
There is a great space before you
opening wide to many things
you do not know

Welcome to our world
